Should I "friend" my boss?

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

Friending your boss, co-worker or clients can be risky business. While there are benefits of connecting with peers outside of work, you will want to keep a few things in mind.

  • You are not obligated to accept anyone's social media request nor explain why you did or did not accept it.

  • Police your profile. If you decide to accept requests from business acquaintances look at your past posts and pictures. Would you print them and put them on the bulletin board at your office? If the answer is no, you will need to scrub your page and pay extra attention to posts (and comments) going forward.

  • Post to social media outside of working hours.

  • Do not post negative comments about co-workers, or your work environment, whether you friend co-workers or not. There is no such thing as a private social media post, there is always a chance someone may share it with your employer.
